2.1.1. Engine block
The engine block is made from diecast aluminum AlSi9Cu3 and comprises the crankcase and the bedplate. The same material has already been used in the established 4-cylinder engines with aluminum crankcases. An established coating system used for the first time by BMW, so-called electric arc wire spraying, optimizes the properties of the cylinder liner.
The cooling jacket has also been optimized and land bores introduced to improve cooling in the land area and adapt it to the requirements of a turbocharged engine.
