ADJUSTMENTS
VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT
1. Valve clearance is adjusted with engine off and engine either warm or cold. Remove valve cover.
2. Rotate crankshaft using center bolt until camshaft is in position for firing No. 1 cylinder (TDC). Both cam lobes of No. 1 cylinder should point upward. Crankshaft pulley timing mark should be aligned with zero timing mark on timing belt cover.
3. Remove valve cover. Use feeler gauges and check clearance of both valves of No. 1 cylinder, measuring between camshaft lobe heel and adjusting disc. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table. Intake and exhaust valves have same adjustment clearances.
4. If clearance is incorrect, align notches in disc at right angle to camshaft. Using Valve Press (5022) and Special Pliers (5026), press and remove adjusting disc. See Fig. 1.
Fig. 1: Adjusting Valve Clearance
5. Use a micrometer and measure thickness of removed adjusting disc. Determine proper thickness for new adjusting disc by subtracting correct clearance from original clearance previously recorded, then adding difference to thickness of old adjusting disc. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table.
6. Discs are available in thicknesses ranging from .130-.177" (3.30-4.50 mm) in increments of .002" (.05 mm). Use only NEW adjusting discs.
7. Coat adjusting discs with oil and install with thickness markings facing down. Remove valve press. Rotate crankshaft to next firing order position and repeat procedure. Firing order is 1, 3, 4, 2.
8. After all valves have been adjusted, rotate camshaft several revolutions, recheck valve clearance, and readjust as required. Install valve cover and gasket.
