NOTE: For engine repair procedures not covered in this article, see ENGINE OVERHAUL PROCEDURES - GENERAL INFORMATION article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.
Engine can be identified by the sixth and seventh characters of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), located on top of instrument panel near left corner of windshield. Engine serial and part number are located on lower left corner of label on camshaft/timing belt cover or stamped on cylinder block, behind distributor.

1. Valve clearance is adjusted with engine off and engine either warm or cold. Remove valve cover.
2. Rotate crankshaft center bolt until camshaft is in position for firing No. 1 cylinder (TDC). Both cam lobes of No. 1 cylinder should point upward. Crankshaft pulley timing mark should be aligned with zero timing mark on timing belt cover.
3. Remove valve cover. Using feeler gauges, check clearance of both valves of No. 1 cylinder, measuring between camshaft lobe and adjusting disc, and record measurement. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS TABLE. Intake and exhaust valves have same adjustment clearances.
4. If clearance is incorrect, align notches in disc at right angle to camshaft. Using Valve Press (5022) and Special Pliers (5026), press and remove adjusting disc. See Fig. 1.
