Theory of Operation
Theory of Operation
The transmission is a three speed, collar shift with straight line shift pattern. It is driven by the hydrostatic drive system.
Shafts and Gears
• Input Shaft - The input shaft is connected to the hydrostatic motor by a splined coupler. The shaft is supported by taper roller bearings. It contains third gear, the third gear shift collar, one shift fork, and drives the transmission lubrication pump. It is in constant mesh with the pinion shaft. All gears in the transmission are helical cut.
• Pinion Shaft - The pinion shaft is carried by tapered roller bearings. It is in constant mesh with the input shaft and contains first and second gears, the first and second gears shift collar, one shift fork, and the pinion gear which is meshed with the ring gear of the differential.
• Differential - The differential is a conventional single cross type with two spider gears. It is carried by tapered roller bearings. It does not have a differential lock mechanism. Output is through left and right output shafts though the brake system, couplers, and drive shafts to the final drives.
Lubrication
• Lubrication Pump - A gerotor lubrication pump is mounted to the right side of the transmission. It is driven by a solid pin placed through the right end of the input shaft. The lubrication pump will rotate and deliver fluid under pressure whenever the hydrostatic motor turns in the forward direction whether the transmission is in gear or neutral. In reverse, the input shaft is being rotated backwards by the hydrostatic motor and the pump is not able to draw lubricant.
In the forward direction, gear lube is drawn though a screen from bottom of the transmission and supplied under pressure to the input shaft and pinion shafts. Orifices within each shaft provide lubrication control to the gears which are free to rotate on each shaft.
The differential is splash lubed as it rotates in the fluid. Lubricant type is API GL-5 80W-90 gear lube.
Shifting Mechanism
• Gear Selection - A shift cable connected between the gear shift lever in the cab and the transmission controls the position of a single shift cam within the transmission. The shift cam has two slots, one for each shift fork roller. One shift fork controls the position of the third gear shift collar on the input shaft, and the other shift fork controls the position of the first and second gear shift collar on the pinion shaft. A detent mechanism is located between the shift cam and transmission cover to positively hold and locate the transmission in each gear. A neutral exists between first and second gears.
