VALVE COVER
Removal & Installation
Remove valve cover bolts. Remove valve cover. To install, reverse removal procedure. Before installing, lightly brush both sides of valve cover gasket with Silicone Lubricant (D 007 000 4). At each end of cylinder head, apply small amount of Silmate (AMV 174 004 01) to corners where half-rounds of bearing caps contact cylinder head gasket surface. DO NOT allow sealant to get into oil opening at corners. Tighten valve cover bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
FRONT COVER OIL SEAL
Removal & Installation
Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT. Remove crankshaft sprocket. Remove seal with Seal Extractor (3203). Lightly lubricate sealing lip and outer edge of seal. Slide seal over Installing Sleeve (3202). Using Pull-
In Sleeve (3265) and bolt, press seal into bore until even with front cover. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
TIMING BELT
Removal
1. Remove accessory drive belt guard. Hold accessory drive belt in place with Mandrel (3204). Using a 15-mm wrench at accessory drive belt tensioner, slacken and remove accessory drive belt.
2. Rotate crankshaft by hand until crankshaft pulley timing marks are aligned. See Fig. 5. Note locating plate on front end of each camshaft sprocket. If large hole in each plate does not face inward, toward center of engine, rotate crankshaft one revolution.
3. Remove Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor from left side of cylinder block, behind oil filter and above oil pan. Insert finger in CKP sensor hole. TDC hole in crankshaft should be felt. Install Crankshaft Holder (3242) in CKP sensor hole. Lightly tighten crankshaft holder.
4. Remove crankshaft vibration damper. Remove lower timing belt guard. Install Camshaft Holder (3243).
Loosen camshaft sprocket bolts about 3 turns. DO NOT remove bolts. Remove camshaft holder. Using puller, loosen camshaft sprockets. Loosen and remove timing belt.
Installation
1. Position timing belt over camshaft sprockets. Install camshaft holder. Position timing belt over all sprockets, then position over tensioner. Lightly tighten tensioner bolt (ensure tensioner can be rotated).
2. Tighten belt by rotating tensioner on bolt. Tighten belt until it can be twisted no more than 90 degrees by hand at point between right camshaft sprocket and water pump pulley. Tighten tensioner bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
3. Tighten camshaft sprocket bolts to specification. Remove camshaft holder (3243). Remove crankshaft holder. Install Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. To install accessory drive belt, install mandrel. Position accessory drive belt over drive sprockets and idler roller, then over tensioner roller. Remove mandrel.

VALVE ADJUSTERS
CAUTION: When removed, place valve adjuster on clean surface with camshaft lobe contact surface facing down. After servicing valve train, carefully and slowly rotate crankshaft 2 revolutions to ensure pistons will not strike valves during engine operation. Wait at least 30 minutes before starting engine.
Removal & Installation
Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT. Remove camshaft. See CAMSHAFT. Remove valve adjusters. To install, reverse removal procedure.
