Removing
– Move front seats to foremost position.
– Switch off ignition.
– Remove centre rear seat in 2nd row ⇒ General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr. 72 ; Rear seats; Removing and installing bench seat/individual seats .
– Fold up floor covering under seat towards left and right ⇒

– Fold insulation under seat towards front.
– Draining fuel tank ⇒ page 23
– Unclip cover -1- for flange at retaining tabs -arrows-.
– Unclip sealing grommet -2- downwards from cover -1-.
– Move cover -1- towards rear along wiring harness.
– Release and pull off connectors -2- and -3- on flange.
– If fitted, detach, release and pull off connector -6-.
– Push up tab -1- in -direction of arrow C-; to do this, reach between floor panel and fuel tank with your finger.
– At the same time, carefully pull fuel pump control unit - J538--2- -in direction of arrow B- out of mounting by grasping hold of wiring harness.
– Carefully pull fuel pump control unit - J538- upwards via wiring harness.
– Guide fuel pump control unit - J538- out towards interior between fuel tank and floor panel.
– Release connector, and remove fuel pump control unit - J538- .
– Guide fuel pump control unit - J538- out towards interior between fuel tank and floor panel.
– Open tank flap unit -2-.
– Clean area around fuel filler neck.
– Unscrew cap -1- for fuel filler neck.
Note
In order to prevent the ingress of dirt, seal the opening of the fuel filler neck with a clean plug.
– Remove tank flap unit -2- ⇒ General body repairs, exterior;

– Guide sealing grommet -1- out of filler pipes -arrows-.
– Pull sealing grommet -1- off body -2-, and remove it.
– Remove rear right wheel ⇒ Running gear, axles, steering;

– Remove rear right wheel housing liner ⇒ General body repairs,

– Unscrew bolts -1- and -2- for fuel filler neck.

– Mark installation position between wheel bearing housing -1- and rear right trailing arm -2-.
– To do this, use a suitable marker pen.
– Make a mark on the trailing arm in the area shown -arrow-.
