Inspection (Tacoma & 4Runner)
1. Inspect timing belt for damaged teeth, cracking or oil contamination. DO NOT twist or bend timing belt inside out. If excessive wear or damage exists on face of timing belt, check for nicks on idler pulley and water pump. If excessive wear or damage exists only on one side of timing belt, check timing belt guide and alignment of all pulleys and sprockets. If excessive wear exists on teeth of timing belt, check timing belt covers for damage, improper gasket installation and foreign material on pulleys and sprockets.
Replace timing belt if damaged.
2. Ensure idler pulleys rotate smoothly and no signs of oil leakage exists at either side of idler pulley.
Replace idler pulley if idler pulley does not rotate smoothly or signs of oil leakage exists.
3. Inspect timing belt tensioner for signs of oil leakage around the rod seal at the center of timing belt tensioner. Replace timing belt tensioner if oil leakage exists.
NOTE: Timing belt tensioner may seep a small amount of oil on rod seal under normal conditions. If excessive amount of oil exists, replace timing belt
tensioner.
4. Hold timing belt tensioner body with rod facing upward and press rod against solid surface. DO NOT hold timing belt tensioner body with rod facing downward when pressing against a solid surface. Replace timing belt tensioner if rod moves.
5. Measure timing belt tensioner rod protrusion from end of rod to edge of timing belt tensioner housing.
See Fig. 18. Replace timing belt tensioner if distance is not .394-.425" (10.00-10.80 mm).

Installation (Tacoma & 4Runner)
1. If installing crankshaft sprocket, align groove in crankshaft sprocket with key in crankshaft. Install crankshaft sprocket. Ensure crankshaft sprocket is installed with sensor ring toward the cylinder block.
See Fig. 15.
2. Install No. 1 and 2 idler pulleys (if removed). Install and tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Ensure idler pulleys move smoothly.
3. If installing camshaft sprockets, install camshaft sprockets on camshafts with the flange side facing outward, away from cylinder head. Ensure knock pin groove on camshaft sprocket aligns with knock pin on camshaft.
4. Install and tighten camshaft sprocket retaining bolts to specification while using spanner wrench to hold camshaft sprocket. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
5. Temporarily install crankshaft pulley bolt in crankshaft. Using crankshaft pulley bolt, rotate crankshaft clockwise until timing mark on crankshaft sprocket aligns with timing mark on oil pump body. See Fig. 19.
6. Use spanner wrench to rotate each camshaft sprocket until timing mark on camshaft sprocket aligns with timing mark on rear timing belt cover. See Fig. 20.
