Excerpt Rewrite
23 00 005 — Subsequent Installation of Five-Speed Gearbox
Remove the gearbox, referring to 23 00 020. Change over the release lever with the release collar. Fill the gearbox with oil.

To prevent the bracket from knocking against the gearbox tunnel, the tunnel should be refinished on the right side, looking in the direction of travel, in area A.

Remove the two existing support blocks, 1 and 2. Fix the five-speed gearbox to the engine. Fit the rubber mounts and cross member. Bolt the support blocks to the cross member temporarily. Raise the five-speed gearbox. Align the support blocks in relation to the gearbox tunnel and mark the position.

It is essential that distance B — 3.149 in / 80 mm — be maintained between the engine mounting and the support blocks.

Mark the support blocks on the gearbox tunnel and drill the fixing holes. Bolt the support blocks firmly to the gearbox tunnel. Exchange the complete propeller shaft. Renew the speedometer shaft.

Introduction Excerpt
This repair manual is intended to ensure that the maintenance and repair work required for BMW cars is done in the correct manner. It should be used by inspectors and fitters as a supplement to the practical and theoretical knowledge acquired at the service training school. The relevant specifications are always provided at the beginning of each main group. These specifications apply to standard cars that have not been involved in an accident and have not been modified after leaving the factory.

Basically speaking, the Touring models are identical to the saloons, so in the specifications and values quoted, reference is only made to points in which the Touring models differ from the other cars. The group system applied in this manual is taken from the flat-rate catalogue.
