ENGINE IDENTIFICATION
NOTE: For engine repair procedures not covered in this article, see ENGINE OVERHAUL PROCEDURES - GENERAL INFORMATION article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.
Engine can be identified by the sixth and seventh characters of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) located on top of instrument panel near left corner of windshield. Engine serial and part number are located on lower left corner of label on camshaft timing belt cover or stamped on cylinder block behind the distributor.
ADJUSTMENTS
VALVE CLEARANCE
1. Valve clearance is adjusted with engine off and engine either warm or cold. Remove valve cover.
2. Rotate crankshaft center bolt until camshaft is in position for firing No. 1 cylinder and valve are closed. Both lobes should point upward. Crankshaft pulley timing mark should be aligned with 0 (zero) timing mark on timing belt cover.
3. Using feeler gauge, check valve clearance of No. 1 cylinder, measuring between camshaft lobe and adjusting shim. Clearance should be within specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table. Intake and exhaust valves have same adjustment clearances.
