ABS/ASR SYSTEM
General features
The braking system is managed by the Bosch 5.0 ABS/ASR system.
This system, being integrated in a single electronic and hydraulic control unit, manages two different functions:
- ABS (Anti Blockier System - for wheel anti-locking);
- ASR (Antriebs Schlupf Regelung - for wheel skidding adjustment during acceleration).
Thus, the two systems can be described separately.
ABS system
The ABS system improves driving safety in emergency situations, e.g. when an unskilled
or panic-stricken driver brings the car to its skid limit, temporarily losing the control of the car.
While running straight on, in fact, if you brake so suddenly as to cause wheel locking,
the car may tend to turn around its vertical axis. This is due to the unavoidable disturbing actions resulting from the different friction coefficients of the four wheels. By releasing the brake pedal the car goes on keeping the unsteered front wheels in the direction of its longitudinal axis (Fig. 14).
Likewise, if you steer keeping the front wheels locked, the car goes straight on, and as soon as the brake pedal is released the car steers and delineates a curve.
