Engine Front Cover Replacement
Removal Procedure
1. Drain the engine oil.
2. Remove the throttle body and intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement.
3. Remove the power steering pump drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Air Conditioning Compressor and Power Steering.
4. Remove the water pump drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Cooling Fan and Generator.
5. Remove the left and right cylinder head covers. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement - Left and Camshaft Cover Replacement - Right.
6. Remove the cooling fan (3) and clutch (4). Refer to Fan Replacement in Engine Cooling.
7. Remove the water pump pulley (1).
8. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
9. Remove the thermostat cap. Refer to Thermostat Replacement (2.0L Engine) or Thermostat
Replacement (2.5L Engine) in Engine Cooling.

10. Disconnect the connector (1) to the power steering pressure switch (2).
11. Remove the 3 bolts from the power steering pump and position out of the way.
12. Remove the 3 bolts from the power steering pump bracket and remove bracket.
13. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
14. Raise the vehicle.
15. Remove the front axle housing if equipped. Refer to Front Axle Housing Replacement in Front Drive
Axle.
16. Remove the lower oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement - Lower.
17. Remove the upper oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement - Upper.
18. Lower the vehicle.

19. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor connector.
20. Remove the bolt and the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
21. Remove the bolts and the front cover (1).

Installation Procedure
1. Clean the sealing surfaces on the front cover, the crankcase, the cylinder block and the cylinder heads.
2. Apply GM P/N 12346240 or equivalent to the front cover at the points indicated (1).

3. Apply engine oil to the oil seal lip (3) and the water pump O-ring (2).
NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
4. Install the front cover (1) and secure with the bolts.
Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 11 N.m (7.5 lb ft).
5. Apply engine oil to the O-ring of the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
6. Install the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. Secure with the bolt.
