Pinpoint Test C: Unusual Starter Noise
Normal Operation
Under normal operation, power is supplied to the starter relay coil through the key switch and circuit 32 (RD/LB). A ground is supplied through circuit 329 (PK) and the Engine Control Module (ECM). When the starter relay coil is energized, the relay contacts close. This allows power through circuit 10 (RD) to the starter solenoid. The solenoid is grounded at the starter motor. Energizing the starter solenoid will engage the starter drive into the ring gear. It also closes the solenoid contacts allowing power directly from the battery to energize the starter motor to start the engine.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
· Starter motor incorrectly mounted
· Worn or damaged starter motor
· Incorrect starter drive engagement to flywheel
