A gear set that does not have the same matching numbers should not be mated together. If either a new ring gear or pinion requires installation, they must be installed as a matched set.
The Spicer heavy duty single reduction rear drive axle receives the rotational torque of the driveshaft through the drive pinion. The rotational torque is transferred from the pinion gear to the matched ring gear which is bolted to the differential case. The differential case transfers the torque to the differential side gears which rotate the axle shafts and puts the vehicle in motion. If the rear drive axle is equipped with a driver-controlled locking differential, the driver can activate a sliding clutch inside the differential which distributes the torque to both axle shafts equally without the differential allowing the differential gears to rotate on the side gears.
The rear drive axle features:
· Full floating hypoid gear carrier assembly
· One-piece high strength steel axle housing
· Straddle mounted hypoid pinion
· Two tapered roller bearings ahead of the pinion teeth for forward and rear thrust and third bearing behind the pinion teeth
· Four precision-forged pinion mate gears
· Forged cross and precision-forged side gears
· Axle shafts and drive pinion splines are of the rolled involute type
