Fuel Tank and Lines
The fuel system consists of the following:
· Fuel tank:
¨ There are 3 fuel tank configurations, aft-of-axle, LH, and LH and RH (saddle tanks).
¨ The LH fuel tank is mounted to the LH frame side rail.
¨ The auxiliary fuel tank is mounted to the RH frame side rail.
¨ The aft-of-axle fuel tank is mounted at the rear of the frame between the side rails and includes a fuel tank filler pipe without a restrictor plate.
· Fuel tubes
· Threaded fuel tank filler cap
· A fuel tank filler pipe on aft-of-axle fuel tank
¨ A fuel level sensor that is mounted in the fuel tank and indicates to the vehicle operator how much fuel is in the fuel tank:
· The fuel level sensor consists of a variable resistor (potentiometer) which is attached to a tube with an integral float. The resistance of the potentiometer varies according to the fuel level in the fuel tank.
· Fuel transfer pump which supplies fuel from the RH fuel tank to the LH fuel tank on dual fuel tank configuration.
· Fuel conditioning module which contains:
¨ a fuel filter and water separator to protect the fuel injectors.
¨ recirculation for improved cold starting.
¨ pressure regulator.
¨ frame-mounted, in-line Fuel Pump (FP), which provides pressurized fuel to the engine and contains a pressure relief valve for overpressure protection in the event of restricted flow.
¨ a Water-In-Fuel (WIF) sensor built-in which informs the driver when the fuel conditioning module must be drained.
· The fuel tank stores the liquid fuel. The FP is controlled by the FP relay. The fuel supply tubes route fuel from the fuel tank to the fuel conditioning module and then to the engine. The fuel return tubes route unused fuel back to the fuel conditioning module then to the fuel tank.
